Thousands of experienced Malaysian workers carry skills that match diploma-level graduates yet hold no formal qualification. APEL, the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning, exists for exactly this situation. It is an MQA-governed framework that converts genuine work experience into academic recognition.
APEL A: access without paper qualifications
APEL A grants entry into a programme of study for candidates who do not meet conventional entry requirements. For example, admission to an MQF Level 4 diploma normally requires SPM credits; through APEL A, a candidate aged 21 or above with relevant work experience can qualify through an assessment of their experience instead, typically an aptitude test and a portfolio.
APEL C: credit for what you already know
APEL C goes further: it awards credit toward specific courses within a programme. If you have run workplace safety inspections for five years, you should not sit through an introductory module teaching you what an inspection is. Through APEL C you compile evidence, work samples, employer attestations, project records, and an assessor maps it against the module's learning outcomes. Approved credits reduce both study time and fees.
What good evidence looks like
Assessors look for evidence that is authentic, current, and sufficient. Strong portfolios typically include job descriptions and appointment letters, samples of real work products, training records, and a reflective statement connecting experience to the learning outcomes claimed.
The MSDI RPEL pathway
MSDI's RPEL-eligible programmes, including the Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health, accept both APEL A and APEL C applications. Our online eligibility checker gives you an indicative answer in two minutes, and an admissions advisor then walks you through portfolio preparation. Experience should count. APEL makes sure it does.
